Common questions
Who can use Gistroom?
Anyone who is 18 or older. Gistroom is built for Nigerians talking about Nigeria, but we do not check where you are from and we never claim to.
Do I need a password?
You confirm your email with a code once, when you sign up. After that you sign in with your email and password, or with Google. You only get a code again if you forget your password.
Who can message or call me?
Only your friends. Someone has to send a friend request and you have to accept it before they can chat with you, call you or invite you to a room.
Will I get alerts when the app is closed?
Yes, once you turn alerts on for that device. Calls, messages and friend requests reach you through your browser or your installed app. On iPhone, add Gistroom to your Home Screen first.
How does it work on mobile data?
Audio comes first. Data saver starts calls with audio only and keeps video at a lower quality. You can switch to video in the middle of a call when you want to.
What is a room?
A room is a live group call for up to 32 people. Anyone can start one on the spot or schedule it. Public rooms show up on the rooms page, private rooms are only for people who are invited.
How do I report someone or something?
Use the report option on a profile, a message, a call or a room. You can also write to safety@gistroom.ng. We keep the last messages as evidence so we can act on a report.
How do I delete my account?
Open Settings and choose Delete account. We ask you to confirm with a code sent to your email. Your files are removed and you show as Deleted user in other people's chats.
Troubleshooting
I do not get alerts when the app is closed
Open Settings, then Notifications, and turn alerts on for this device. Check that your browser allows notifications for Gistroom. Some Android phones stop background apps to save battery, so allow Gistroom to run in the background. Missed calls always show in your call log.
Notifications are blocked
Open the lock icon next to the address, choose Site settings and set Notifications to Allow. Then come back here and press Send a test notification.
The browser is fully closed on a Mac
On a Mac, Chrome and Edge only deliver alerts while the browser is running. Quit it completely and nothing arrives until you open it again. Keep it open in the background, or install Gistroom as an app.
Battery saver or app killers on some Android phones
Some phones, including many Tecno, Infinix, Itel and Xiaomi models, stop apps in the background to save battery. Allow Gistroom (and Chrome) to run in the background, turn off battery saver for them, and lock them in the recent apps list.
iPhone needs the app on the Home Screen
On iPhone and iPad, alerts only work for the installed app. Open Gistroom in Safari, tap Share, choose Add to Home Screen, open it from there and sign in once inside the installed app.
Windows Chrome background setting
In Chrome, open Settings, then System, and turn on Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed. Without it, alerts stop when every Chrome window is closed.
Your session ended
Alerts continue for up to 30 days after you are signed out, with plain text only and no names. Open Gistroom and sign in to get full alerts again.
Gistroom cannot reach my microphone
Allow the microphone for Gistroom in your browser settings, then try again. Make sure no other app is using it.
My camera is blocked
You stay in the call with audio. Allow the camera for Gistroom in your browser settings, then switch to video.
I cannot find the install option
On Android and desktop Chrome or Edge, use the Install button in Settings or the install icon in the address bar. On iPhone, open Gistroom in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen.
My code did not arrive
Check your spam folder and wait a minute, then ask for a new code. You can ask for up to five codes in an hour.
We have got you.
Open Gistroom and get talking. If anything goes wrong, you know where to find us.
